It sucks to lose that kind of item. You have my sympathies.
I'm confident that I could explain the most possible course of events in great detail, but in short: It was unavoidable. There is 'nothing' a person living a normal life could have done about it.
Depending on your budget you can...
...be grateful for the time you've spend with it and bury it in a park or your garden.
...look for a replacement on internet auction sites.
...or consider kintsugi. ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kintsugi ) It might not be cheap, but think about what an awesome talking point it would make... "Yeah, I had that fixed by somebody with an ancient Japanese technique..." ;)
