The handle on my favorite mug just broke off for no reason.
This must be the work of Shao Kahn.
It sucks to lose that kind of item. You have my sympathies.
I'm confident that I could explain the most possible course of events in great detail, but in short: It was unavoidable. There is 'nothing' a person living a normal life could have done about it.
Depending on your budget you can...
...be grateful for the time you've spend with it and bury it in a park or your garden.
...look for a replacement on internet auction sites.
...or consider kintsugi. ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kintsugi ) It might not be cheap, but think about what an awesome talking point it would make... "Yeah, I had that fixed by somebody with an ancient Japanese technique..." ;)

Oh no! Fortunately seems possible to glue that back on, though indeed structural integrity or surfacial perfection will probably never be the same again... that's a cool mug.
